The History of Ninja and Their Journey to the Modern Era
The history of ninja originates from actual groups in medieval Japan's Warring States period, who were responsible for intelligence gathering and espionage. They developed a specialized technical system called "ninjutsu" and served various feudal lords. Their activities were not supernatural abilities as often depicted in fiction, but were supported by physical prowess, observational skills, and deep knowledge of local terrain and human psychology, all based on rigorous training.
After the Meiji Restoration, their role came to an end. However, from the latter half of the 20th century, their image was reconstructed through novels, films, and manga, transforming them into a global pop culture icon. In this process, historical facts and creative fiction intermingled, forming today's "image of the ninja."
Our "History of Ninja" project has begun a journey to unravel this complex transition. It started as a small research group, beginning with the collection and analysis of primary historical sources. Eventually, these results evolved into applications such as educational content and local tourism resources.
Currently, we aim to play a role in connecting Japan's traditional culture to the future, with two main pillars: disseminating accurate knowledge based on historical facts and promoting sustainable cultural tourism founded upon that knowledge. This journey itself can be said to embody the very essence of the ninja spirit: "adaptation" and "sustainability."
